Canadian July trade surplus 3.9 bln cad vs revised 4.1 in June
Canada's merchandise trade surplus fell to 3.9 bln cad in July, down from a revised 4.1 bln cad in June and 4.4 bln cad in May, Statistics Canada reported.
The June surplus had originally been estimated at 4.7 bln cad.
In July, Canadian companies exported 38.5 bln cad worth of merchandise, up 2.1 pct from June, and they imported 34.6 bln cad worth, a 3.1 pct gain
The largest boost to exports came from machinery and equipment, exports of which were up 4.9 pct in July to 8.1 bln cad. The sector advanced primarily on the strength of aircraft and other transportation equipment, which rose 15.3 pct.
Turning to imports, the July gain was broad based, with every commodity group barring forestry products and other consumer goods on the rise. The largest rise was in the automotive products sector, imports of which surged 11.2 pct to 7.3 bln cad in July. Imports of trucks and other motor vehicles increased 19.4 pct to a record high 1.6 bln cad.
